Q: You have a love of style & beauty, when did you decide you wanted to break into the industry?
Jennie Kay: When I was little, I used to always do fashions shows after I did people’s hair and makeup in my house!
Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of starting up your successful business?
JK: Definitely learning to manage people! Doing the reception work, trying to make enough time to do everything — emails, bookings, making time no matter what to have them in the chair to actually do their hair or makeup, plus everything else in between.
Q: What is your favorite part about working weddings?
JK: Hmm… I like when I get to see the groom’s face when he sees his bride for the first time, I really like that.
Q: Do you have a secret for success?
JK: To keep on working, even when you feel like you can’t…. and having my brain, that is my secret for success! haha 😉
Q: What is your favorite iconic hairstyle?
JK: I love Farrah Fawcett’s hair (who doesn’t), and Veronica Lake. Probably Veronica Lake though– I love the classic look of brushed out finger waves it’s so pretty. Their very different looks.
Q: Do you have a favorite era for hair, beauty and fashion?
JK: I love the twenties hair and makeup– finger waves! Plus the fashion if the twenties was amazing — flappers and sparkles and jewelery. Fashion of the seventies was so fun also, I feel like wear my own version of seventies styles now.
Q: What makes Jennie Kay a Beauty Parlour Unique?
JK: You are one on one with me everytime you are in my chair, and no one else is in the salon. The phone isn’t ringing, it’s peaceful and you’re the center of my attention. You’re always dealing with me and my expertise, not other stylists.
Q: You’ve been working on a makeup line, what is your favorite part about creating this?
JK: Picking the colors definitely, playing around with the different textures, and seeing my name on a product. I will only use something that I really love and if I believe it works. My new foundations are great, they’re probably my favorite of the line so far.
Q: You’ve worked with celebrities, who has been your favorite and most fun to work with to date?
JK: So far, probably Holly Valance. It was just her and I and she was super nice to chat and work with.
Q: What is your favorite look of the moment so far in 2012?
JK: The hair you would normally call mousey toned paired with pastel colors to brighten the look. I love all the nail trends – nails have become so fun I am always trying new looks on my nails. It seems as if there is a new nail craft every week. I have clients who love to have this look. I love to use Schwarzkopf colors for this look!
Q: What is a goal you hope to reach by the end of 2012?
JK: It’s a secret I can’t tell! You’ll soon find out!
Q: What trends have you tried or invented this year?
JK: A lot of pastel ombré hair, neon colors with neutrals, color blocking outfits and hair. Caviar nails! Studding my outfits, embellished collars– I just bought a leopard collared blouse I love it.
Q: Do you have a makeup or hair item/brand that you’ve used or stuck with forever?
JK: I’ve used Makeup Forever brand, forever! I’ve used my hot tool Marcel curling irons forever, and batiste dry shampoo for around ten years. My secret bobby pins, they’re my favorite no one knows where I get them ! And Schwarzkopf products have been a go to of mine in the salon to use on clients and myself!
